Hiwassee students

Since 1849, Hiwassee College has been committed to providing a quality United Methodist education to any qualified student, regardless of financial means.

Set in the East Tennessee foothills over 400 acres our tranquil campus of about 450 students is characterized by unparalleled opportunities for growth and achievement in a personalized, value-centered environment with a special focus on the first two years of college.

For over 150 years, our charitable mission has teamed with our special campus setting to provide thousands of students the opportunity of a lifetime.

In order to continue to provide our students with great beginnings for generations to come, Hiwassee College relies on the support of annual donations.

Student Needs

  • Over 80% require financial aid
  • 40% require full assistance
  • Several are first-generation college students
  • Over $1 million in unfunded aid for Hiwassee
College students must be raised by the
    Advancement Office every year

Ways to Help    (for more options, call 423-420-1222)

  • Cash, Check or Credit Card contributions can be mailed directly to the College, given online (credit), called in (credit) at (423) 420-1222.

  • Autodraft payments allow you to automatically draft a donation from your account on a monthly basis (see online form - - requires Adobe Acrobat Reader).

  • Real Estate gifts provide a stable, long-term contribution to the College. Real estate gift options include homes, vacation properties, condominiums, undeveloped land and several other types of real estate.

  • Life Insurance is a way to make a significant commitment to the College and is particularly appropriate for policies that are paid-up and no longer needed in your estate planning.

  • Bequests are a way to leave a lasting legacy of support to Hiwassee through your Will, where you can include charitable gifts in the form of specific property (i.e., cash, securities, works of art, etc.), a percentage of your estate or the residue of your estate. Your attorney can help you plan the most appropriate type of bequest when you make or update your Will.

  • Gift Annuities are a way to be paid a fixed annual annuity income from Hiwassee College in exchange for a gift of cash or securities (real estate is sometimes accepted). The rate of the annuity is determined by the age of the annuitant. You will incur no immediate capital gains tax on the transfer. Part of the annuity will be tax-free and you will receive an income tax deduction for part of the gift.

  • Charitable Remainder Trusts, which may be executed by your attorney, provide a lifetime income for you and your beneficiary. At the end of the trust’s term, the trust principle is distributed to Hiwassee College. You incur no capital gains tax on the transfer of appreciated long-term securities or real estate to the trust and you receive an income tax deduction for part of the gift.

  • Gifts-In-Kind are an opportunity for you to donate new or used, large or small items to the college. Examples of gifts-in-kind include land, stocks or bonds, automobiles, or even smaller items such as computers or jewelry. Gifts-in-kind may be tax deductable. For more information, please contact (423) 442-1220.
