Sprucing Up for Hiwassee College

Pastor Jason Crandall

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. — These days, volunteer opportunities abound at Hiwassee College in Madisonville. As the college prepares for the arrival of students for fall semester, groups of volunteers are pitching in and lending a helping hand.

Pastor Jason Crandall of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church brought a group of volunteers on campus recently. Pastor Crandall, along with Jody Derrick, Roy Trew and Gary Cline, spent the day scrubbing floors and cleaning windows in a men’s dormitory. “I view this as mission work,” said Pastor Crandall. “This may be just down the road from us, but Hiwassee College is a mission of the church just like any other. This gives us a chance to help that mission, while also helping people in our area.”

“We deeply appreciate everyone who volunteers time to help us on campus,” says Mark Elam Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Not everyone can give money. Gifts of time are very valuable to us too.” There are many needs and opportunities to do volunteer work at Hiwassee notes Elam. “This time of year is especially busy because we want everything spic and span and looking nice for our new and returning students.”

With Hiwassee’s enrollment expected to double over last year’s, the college is still seeking volunteers to come help before classes begin Wednesday, August 25. However, volunteers are needed throughout the year as well. To volunteer or to learn more, please call the Office of Institutional Advancement at 423-420-1222.
