Tigers Coach Rodney Nelson

"Coach" is a title Rodney Nelson has carried for over thirty years. Most recently as Maryville College Assistant Men's Basketball Coach and Head Men's JV Basketball Coach, Nelson's coaching experience includes twenty-four years as Head Men's Basketball Coach at Maryville High School and a total of five years as assistant at Maryville College.

Notable players he has coached include Lee Humphrey (Univ. of Florida), Tom Gallaher (Radford Univ.), Andy Tipton (Carson Newman), Tyler Gaskin (All-American at Tennessee Wesleyan), Scott Feather (Wake Forest), and Rod Cross (Hiwassee College and UTC).

Rodney's ties to Hiwassee College go back to 1977 when, as a sophomore transfer, he played basketball for Coach Donnie Jenkins. After graduating from Hiwassee in 1978, he went on to play basketball at Maryville College under Coach Rick Byrd, where he was named a Division Three, Southern Region All-American player.

Nelson says he sees his players as being in the midst of their life journey which extends off the court to their academics and character-building.

Retiring from Maryville City Schools this May is opening the door for Rodney to continue fulfilling his mission of influencing students through his new position as Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach at Hiwassee College.

Says Nelson, "When you look at Hiwassee with its great potential, it's exciting to be a part of the renewal of the college."

Matt Cravens

Coach Matt Cravens is entering his second year as Head Women's Basketball Coach here at Hiwassee College. He comes to us after playing one season at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN before transferring to Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia, where he finished his playing career.

The 2010-11 season was an up and down year; with more ups than downs for the Lady Tigers. They battled through some hard times early on, but managed to finish strong and give the Women's Basketball Program it's first double digit win season in a few years.

Youth was the biggest hurdle for the Lady Tigers to jump in the 2010-11 campaign, but having to throw the young group in the fire early may prove to be the key for success down the road. Coach Cravens says, "We took our share of lumps early in the year, but not one time did our Team get discouraged. We knew that sucess wasn't going to be handed to us, so they kept showing up for work every day, and it paid off in a big way in the last half of the season."

The 2011-12 season will see the Lady Tigers on the court with the entire current roster returning; in addition, Coach Cravens' first full recruiting class will join the mix. "I am really excited about what the future holds for our Program here at Hiwassee. The incoming freshmen will definitely learn a great deal about how to work on and off the court from the group we have returning" Coach Cravens says. He also added, "Great things are coming here at Hiwassee College, much sooner than later, and we are looking forward to having everyone come out and be a part of the ride."
